This one allows letters and numbers only; that one allows hyphens. Using the same password for everything is bad practice, so new emphasis has emerged on passwords that are easy to remember. Sentences or phrases of even very simple words have surfaced as a practical approach to this problem.
Well, the argument against short and simple is concrete, but the others are not immediately clear. Every company seems to come down differently on the balance between what makes a password secure, what a customer can remember, and what their systems can manage. We wanted to find out why, so we asked several of them.
The brokerage and banking company Charles Schwab has strict length limits—passwords can be no longer than eight characters, no shorter than six. But security questions are easily bypassed.
Bulgatz did not provide a reason as to why passwords are limited to only eight characters. Two-factor authentication is the undisputed best approach to keep interlopers from jacking your account, cumbersome though it would be if universally implemented. However, two-factor authentication is as susceptible to phishing as passwords are. Microsoft imposes a length limit on the passwords its customers create: passwords can include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols, but they can be no longer than 16 and no shorter than eight characters.
Microsoft says that most attacks on accounts cannot be defended by password length, and the company adds that password cracking is hardly its biggest problem. According to a comment written on the Windows blog from Eric Doerr, currently a group program manager at Microsoft, a shift to longer allowed password lengths is not simple.
Not all users buy this excuse. A thread on Stackoverflow took the opposite position, though for passwords with a much smaller limit eight characters, for one banking site. Evernote is fairly flexible with passwords, allowing between six and 64 characters and all symbols except, strangely, spaces. Adding support for spaces only in the middle of the password would make the regular expression defining them three times longer, Engberg said.
And for that extra effort, the entropy uncertainty of what character holds any given position in the password would increase by only 1. For that reason, Engberg and Evernote decided to forego spaces. Evernote also recently stated it will add optional two-factor authentication later this year. Symbols are another point of contention. If nothing else, the varying password restrictions keep us from being lazy and using the same password for everything, which is itself good practice.
But as Microsoft noted, many successful password attacks have little to do with the content of the password itself though the situation is getting worse and more to do with phishing or other manipulations of the user, rather than his or her password. Talk about reading the comments and not getting the message. Just wow. The ignorance. You guys have tested Attack on titan but i dont know if it refers to both games … just attack on titan 1 or attack on titan 2.
I, too wish to know this. Why is this so much more convoluted and complex than changing a Steam name or Xbox Live name? Sony gotta be Sony about it LOL. Easiest thing they ever did was demonstrating how to share used games on PS4. For someone like me who first created an account 9 years ago and recently created an entirely new Playstation account to replace an embarrassing username, does a system like this mean that I would have the possibility of getting old save files and trophies moved from the old account to the new?
Looks like nothing will transfer. If you want, you could change your currently used account to a name similar to your first account. Man, what a historic update. I have PS3 trophies on my PS4. You can test that safe more than main account. What exactly is the expected behavior for unsupported games?
You mention in the FAQ some of the negative side effects that can happen in rare cases, but what should we expect the normal behavior to be? Should it mostly display the new ID anyway? Or would the game just crash outright? It should only be available for a limited time and than you release it back to the public. Can you guys also do a sweeping change annually or every so often and free up canceled or non-active accounts? So these known critical issues, can they be fixed or patched at some point?
Also would that need to be done on the back end by game developers or is it the way your system is set up on your end around the PSN ID? I just want to know if these issues will be fixed in the future, left as is or case by case. I changed my name and now can no longer access GTA Online. Hopefully Rockstar can release a fix for this. I had saved a name I wanted to switch to on another account. Is there any way to free that name so I could use it? Check the supported game list.
And use the April rule. Will all my purchased stuff still work for Vita? I just checked the results on my PS Vita and can see everything I purchased. I dont really get it. Will you fix the issued games in near future? Adding to this comment. GTA V is listed as having minor issues. The feature is now available here in Montreal Canada! Just switched from xX. Xx to JPuss I just moved from Australia to the US. I agree. What does it matter? It all boils down to this if you were ignorant enough to make a dumb name like jpuss69 etc then ya your going to live with the consequences of those actions like losing saved data or trophies which trophies are meaningless.
The psn is very difficult and they are reworking the psn for the PS5 so we should see better results in the next console. It looks to me like, when you create an account, your chosen username is your account identifier, instead of a numerical string, like the way every other database does it. And now we end up with a complicated alternative where it should have been a simple one. Yes, some people picked silly names, not thinking about down the road, when they no longer like the name….
But some other were stuck with the names we have.. Sony converted PSU accounts into PSN accounts, sticking us with whatever name we had…would have been nice to know they were gonna do that, so we could change them, before they became permanent. And now, 12 years later, they give us this…a system that can change our name, but at risk to our progress, trophies, and purchased content….
You had plenty of choice. Nobody put a knife or gun to someones head and said choose xXXbluntgodXXx. Why is the current generation so full of excuses? Good luck to everyone, dont waste your money on this, wait until they fix it or dont go for it, just create a new account. No content will be transfered, no trophies, no games, no DLC. You would have to buy all again and just to keep what?
